Essential
Facts You May Not Find Elsewhere
This
page is designed for musicians who have questions they have not been able to find answers to. It is not exactly a "how
to play the guitar" or "How to play the piano" site, but the information here will help.
If you
are just beginning, or are a new player, there are several things I recommend that you do right away:
Find a teacher.
(See the page How to Choose a Teacher, which will be up soon.)
Go to concerts or gigs by musicians you love. Watch
what they do with their bodies, hands, mouths, arms, shoulders, feet and all partsof their bodies. Buy their CDs and listen,
listen, listen.
Start playing by ear. Play easy stuff like children's songs.
Buy a playable instrument
that is not overly expensive. (You can upgrade when you have more experience.) Take someone with you who knows a lot about
your instrument and can help you choose one. Do not rely on the sales representatives alone to choose your instrument.

Welcome! I am very glad that you have come to check out my website. For many years I have wanted to
share what I have discovered about music with a larger audience than I was able to reach in my nearly 20 years of piano teaching.
Many people over the years have asked me to write a book. This website is my book.... Free for your enjoyment. I hope this
website will answer most of your questions. Although I will not always be able to answer individual letters, I invite you
to email me with questions you would like to see answered here. I will do my best to answer your questions on the site. Sincerely, Marian

Why this website exists
This
website is constructed, written, and maintained by Marian Drake, Ed.M., who feels music learning has frequently been made
much too complicated and hard. She offers this website to help free people up from the grip of academia. She knows how people
can teach each other by jamming and sharing our music together.
This website provides arcana (very basic
information) that fills gaps not often considered in music lessons, jamming, or even discussions among musicians.
Once we are aware of our God-given abilities of playing by ear, there is nothing that can take the joy of our own music
away from us.
Folk and traditional music is not accepted by tyranny. In these unstable political times, let
us remember to claim our heritage. May this website give you information and encouragement to do so!
Blessings,
healing, and peace to you, in your music.
